Oyo Govt Declares Zero-tolerance for Idle Agric Land

The Oyo State government has introduced zero-tolerance policy for Idle land in the state to make land available to individuals and investors who intend to invest in agriculture.

The commissioner for Agriculture, Natural Resources and Rural Development Prince Oyewole Oyewumi who said this, stressed that government was not interested in snatching idle lands from the owners but it would serve as mediator between the land owners and the investors who intend to invest in agriculture.

Oyewunmi who spoke at a press conference held at the governor’s office in Ibadan, said the policy, which sought to resolve challenges individuals and corporate organizations were facing in getting land for commercial cultivation, would educate residents on the value of land and usage of land in the state.

He said the government wanted the people of the state to appreciate the fact that the major asset in the state is land, adding that if government could achieve it, it would boost agricultural impute, create more employment and create food production for the whole country.

Announcing that the state had over 2.5 million hectares of land available for development of agriculture in the state, he said, “Despite this opportunity, we have been experiencing some difficulties in terms of making land available for agricultural development as well as those small scale farmers. Today we are here to address the people of the state to make farmland available for agricultural investment. We want all of us to see agriculture as business. In a bid to address issues to have access to agricultural farmland, the governor had approved the sensitization programmer for the farmland owners and other stake holders to encourage them to allow investors use their land for agricultural purposes.”
